Year 10 - 11 Portraiture Inspiration and Artists
There is no specific order to the following images...
Alice Neel
I like her use of a single outline and also the way she uses high contrasts to represent the light direction as it falls across the figure.
Luc Tuyman
Tuyman paints portrait highly saturated with light, his portraits look like photographs.
Now for something a little more dramatic...
Dawn Mellor
Tim Benson
You can follow Benson on facebook, he regularly updates his status with new paintings. He has a similar style to Lucien Freud, it is expressive and impressionistic, you can see the brush strokes clearly.
Lucien Freud
Michele Meister
Meister uses found materials to make a collaged surface to work on.
Elizabeth Peyton
Peyton paints portraits of celebrities like Dawn Mellor but less gruesome!
Pablo Picasso - Abstract Impressionism.
John Currin
Vincent Van Gogh
Andy Warhol made prints of celebrity.

A flock of art...
More examples of artists using birds in their art...
Audubon
and for a less traditional portrayal have a look at work by Kathleen Lolley...
how about these sculptures made from scrap metal by the artist Joe Pogan...
Pogans work makes me wonder where each bit of metal came from and who used it, what did the keys open? who used the spoons?...
John Dilnot makes art boxes out of maps books and birds...
Mark Powell also uses found surfaces to work on, here he has drawn onto a used envelope...
there seems to be a theme here, journeys, birds go on a journey when they migrate and letters travel when they are sent. I wonder if the letter has any direct connection with the birds migration? have they been sent from the same starting point to the destination of the migrating bird? Maybe, maybe not...
Illustrations by the artist Gabriel Moreno...
can you see the birds?

Year 8 project - Birds
Work by Paula Swisher
I really like the way Paula Swisher has drawn and painted on found paper with print on. It makes me wonder what the connection is between the two?
Check out some of her annimations on her website
